History

At Weston Shore Infant School and Weston Park Primary School, History teaching focuses on enabling pupils to think as historians through an enquiry based approach.

How History is taught at Weston Shore Infant School Weston Park Primary School

As children progress through the school, they focus on particular concepts to develop their understanding of these and how they have shaped our lives today.

These concepts are: civilization, legacy, monarchy, social class, invasion and settlement, locality, migration and lifestyle and culture.

Through exploring these concepts, an emphasis is placed on examining primary and secondary sources including historical artefacts, pictures and texts. Where appropriate, pupils are given the opportunity to visit sites of historical significance.

Teachers here recognise and value the importance of stories in history teaching and as an important way of stimulating curiosity about the past.

We focus on helping pupils understand that historical events can be interpreted in different ways and that they are encouraged to ask critical questions when looking at the origins of sources.

SMSC and philosophy in History

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. This is at the heart of our curriculum and we want our children to make safe choices and develop a deep spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We actively look for links to this.

We also teach P4C, Philosophy for Children, and we want our children to have the chance to discuss and debate in an open-minded manner.
